Throughout this three-day period the virtues I attempted to
master were temperance, industry, and cleanliness.
Temperance: Temperance is a virtue that consists of not
eating or drinking too much than necessary. I chose this because I have been a
vegan for months and I know how it feels. Even though for a period of time I
ditched my vegan diet for vegetarian, I did not escape my portion control. I
eat a little bit of everything and finish my meal before I feel like I am full.
Through the course of these three days, I was completely successful in
practicing this virtue because it was easy. Regarding drinking, it was easier
because I do not consume any drink besides water and a decent amount of tea
everyday.
Industry: This virtue meant that I had to cut all unnecessary
activities, including watching television, listening to music, and texting. I
chose this virtue because I have a tendency of listening to music and texting
often. Therefore, I selected this as a challenge to even higher levels of
productivity. Even though I strongly attempted in trying to complete this
virtue, I still failed. On Thursday, instead of completing make-up work for my
absence, I listened to music and downloaded new songs into my I-pod, wasting a
whole lot of time. On Saturday I texted my friends and we chatted for hours.
Because of that I did not finish my loads of homework and left it for Sunday
night.
Cleanliness: The goodness of cleanliness means that a person
should be clean, sanitary, and hygienic. I chose this because I love being neat
and clean. Also, I had a flu and I had to make sure that no other person got it
from me. At home I used plastic utensils for everything, and at school I refused
to share pomegranates with Anna. I also used hand sanitizer every twenty
minutes. Ever since I could remember I have loved keeping myself clean AT ALL
TIMES. Thus, throughout this time, I was entirely successful with this
virtue.
I think the three virtues you chose to perfect are the most important ones for living a happy and successful life. Temperance is needed in order to keep your body in a healthy state. Without industry no work will be done and you will stay wherever you are and never move forward. Cleanliness is a virtue that all people should have. Without cleanliness having a social life is nearly impossible.
ReplyDeleteThe three virtues that you chose are important in ones daily life. But, I believe that you did not really give yourself a challenge since you already do not eat much nor drink much; according to what you mention. Or cleanliness, when I read about your cleanliness, it seems as though you are always clean, so why choose cleanliness. In industry I see major challenges for teenagers today, one can not simply live a day without their smart phones and mastering that would take time.
ReplyDeleteI admire that, although you failed at industry, you at least tried. As for temperance and cleanliness, why choose those virtues when, as you mentioned, you have already mastered them? Why not choose different virtues that you do not already possess, and attempt to recognize other flaws you may have?
ReplyDeleteTemperance and cleanliness must have been easy for you. I always see you eating healthy and when I offer you food you always refuse in order to maintain your portions. Ever since I have known you, you have always been organized and have kept your hygiene. Industry is quite a hard virtue to follow, especially in this century and decade. A day does not go by where one does not use technology. This was a challenge I knew I could not overcome therefore I did not choose it, but I give you props for at least considering this one.
ReplyDeleteKristine, it is very brave to me that you have chosen to be a vegetarian because I know that if it was me, I would not be able to do the same. With this choice, I am glad to see that temperance was easy for you and you were able to succeed with it. It is no surprise to me that you were successful with cleanliness as well, because you have always been organized and clean. However, I understand that you were not able to succeed with industry because I am sure that you are not the only one with the same problem. I can safely say, that most of our classmates and friends, also get distracted or do useless activities that take our time away. Though, no worries we could all use a break once in a while and maybe if you keep practicing, you can succeed with this virtue one day as well.
ReplyDeleteThe three virtues you chose are very important in one's life. Maintaining cleanliness, temperance, and industry will promise a well balanced life to someone. It is not surprising that you were able to succeed at cleanliness and temperance but it was very surprising that you did not succeed with industry because you always put your school work and priorities before anything else.
ReplyDeleteThe three virtues you decided to take on are truly important. Temperance is very hard for me to achieve due my eating habits and eating until I feel like I am about to explode. You achieved it quite easily and therefor it brings you one step closer to moral perfection. Industry means being productive and like you, I waste most of my time on my phone, I-pod, or watching television. I think industry would be one of the hardest vitues to take on and therefore shows us how brave you are for choosing to achieve it. Last but definitely not least is cleanliness. Cleanliness is very important in one's life and you have shown us a great example of it. You had been sick and still maintained it. You have done a nice job at trying to take on three of the tasks to achieve moral perfection.
